One of most common musculoskeletal injuries happens in different age groups is sprained ankle. It occurs when rolling, twisting or turning ankle in an improper way. This can over stretch or tear the tough and elastic bands of tissue (ligaments) that help hold your ankle bones together.
Signs and symptoms of Sprain Injury
Depending on the severity of the injury, signs and symptoms of a sprained ankle could be varied:
- Pain, especially when bearing the affected foot
- Tenderness when touching ankle
- Different on walking
- Limited range of motion
- Unstable ankle
The function of ligaments is to stabilize the joints and prevent excessive movement. When the ligaments are forced beyond their normal range of motion, ankle will be sprained.
Sprained ankle usually involve one or more of the over stretched or torn ligaments.
Inversion injury, or lateral ankle sprain is the most common type of ankle sprain. It happens when the foot twists inward, damaging the ligaments of the outer ankle which includes the anterior talofibular (ATFL), calcaneofibular (CFL) and posterior talofibular ligaments (PTFL).
Less common are the eversion injury, or medial ankle sprain. It happens when the foot twists outward, damaging the ligaments of the inner ankle which is the deltoid ligament.
High ankle sprains like anteroinferior tibiofibular ligament injury are reportedly uncommon and it happens only when a lateral force exerted on the foot in dorsiflexion.

Especially if an ankle sprain causes more than just slightly pain and swelling, it’s necessary to see a clinician. If severely injured ankle without proper treatment and rehabilitation, ankle wont get fully recovered. It will cause ankle lose its range of motion and stability, resulting in recurrent sprains which also need more time on healing.
