Moxibustion is a form of heat therapy in which “moxa” (a substance created from dried leaves of the herbs mugwort or wormwood) are burned on or very near the surface of the skin. It treats and prevents disease by applying heat at certain points or locations on the body to

  • warm the meridians
  • invigorate and promote the flow of Qi and blood
  • dispel cold and dampness
  • and strengthen the immune system

It is used therapeutically to relieve cold or stagnant conditions like arthritic pain, menstrual cramps, fluid retention, feelings of coldness, low immunity, digestion problems, and debilitating conditions, such as weakness and fatigue. A condition that does not respond to acupuncture might instead be helped by Moxibustion Therapy.

There are two types of moxibustion – direct and indirect moxibustion. For direct moxibustion, a burning moxa cone is placed on the skin and removed before it burns down to the skin. As for indirect moxibustion, physicians may set the burning moxa over a layer of ginger or salt placed on the patient’s skin. Alternatively, a burning moxa stick is held near the targeted area of treatment for several minutes.
